Gary John Bishop—author, speaker, and trainer—has some interesting titles for his books, and they definitely sell. I am reading one now for a book club. In one of the chapters, he talks about doing, not just thinking about things.
I have always believed that successful people do the success, while unsuccessful people think about it. While someone else is drumming up reasons why something won’t work, I am usually knee-deep in doing the work to figure it out.
I’m up early every day (yes, weekends too), making a daily list, laying out my day, and then launching myself into it. Now, I’m not going to say I always make the best choices with my time, or that I don’t procrastinate sometimes—but mostly, I am moving toward something in my life.
Mr. Bishop talks about doing the things you need to do to get where you want to be—grinding it out daily.
The laws of physics say that a body at rest will stay at rest, and a body in motion will stay in motion. What we don’t talk about enough is motivation and the momentum it takes to move a body from rest into motion.
I call it motivational muscle.
You have to practice it to build it. These motivational muscles don’t work unless you flex them. The things you do not use get rusty, and it becomes harder to get them to work again.
How many times do we think about doing something—anything—but never actually get started?
It takes a few things to happen: first, actual physical movement to begin; then the mindset and commitment to follow through; and finally discipline to keep going.
Once you start, you need to reinforce the action in some way so that you repeat it. The more you repeat something, the more likely it becomes a habit.
Know that your biggest sabotages are usually your thoughts, negative beliefs, and previous behaviors—and all of these can be overcome.
Practice new behaviors. Start small. Make a change in your day, your clothes, your work—it doesn’t matter what. Just do it.
Disrupt your life. Step out of routine and comfort. Get started now, this minute, today.
By this time next month, your life could be different.
You could be different.
Do the DOING.
Tell me something that would be a game changer if you started today.
Peggy
